The Agency for Social Protection came into existence in January 2012 following the merger of the then Social Security Fund and the Social Welfare Agency.

The Agency offers statutory and non-statutory benefits and several schemes to all Seychellois citizens upon meeting the relevant criteria under a particular benefit category. Statutory benefits are covered under the Social Security Act, 2010.

The most commonly known non-statutory benefit is welfare assistance.

Agency for Social Protection provides comprehensive assistance in accordance to its mandate by bringing together specialists from various government departments and NGOs to work alongside the agency.
